Account book, 1843-1849; 1886.

The account book, for the periods 1843 to 1849 and 1886 includes a printed constitution and a letter from Association member John Waldo Lincoln (1787-1852) to Newton in 1847 reporting the theft of grapes from Lincoln's farm and demanding prosecution. The volume contains a brief list of expenses from 1843 to 1849, and an annual list of members and their admission fees from 1843 to 1849. There are also records of savings bank deposits and an entry concerning compensation paid to John Waldo Lincoln for his loss. According to the sole entry for 1886, the Association had "become extinct by the death of its members" and the funds were then transferred to the Worcester County Horticultural Society.

Rejoice Newton was a prominent Worcester attorney and Massachusetts state legislator. He was born of father Isaac Newton on 11 Oct. 1782 in Greenfield, Mass., and died on 4 Feb. 1868 in Worcester. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1807 and completed his legal studies in Northampton shortly after. Newton opened a successful practice in the city of Worcester and was appointed county attorney in 1818, a post which he held for six years. The Worcester Association for the Protection of Fruit was organized in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1843 for the purpose of protecting "Gardens, Orchards and Fields for depredations," i.e., thieves. The members agreed to "detect and furnish means of punishing all depredations" either through a settlement with the guilty persons or through prosecution in court.
